PEP BACKED TO MATCH SIR ALEX’S LATE 90s DOMINANCE WITH FIFTH PREM TITLE IN SIX YEARS

Optimism aplenty as no fanbase predict their club to finish lower than 13th, while 81% of Spurs fans backing Conte to overcome trophy hoodoo

LIVERPOOL were agonisingly close to a quadruple last season - yet it was Manchester City’s Pep Guardiola who ended up with an awesome foursome.

As Jurgen Klopp’s Reds came up just short in their bid to win all prizes going, his Spanish counterpart clinched his fourth Premier League title in five years.

And now Guardiola has been tipped to raise that number to a famous five this term by his adoring City fanbase, matching the five tiles in six years that Sir Alex Ferguson’s all-conquering Manchester United side won between 1995 and 2001.

When asked which position their club was most likely to finish this campaign as part of Sky Bet’s Fan Hope Survey, City supporters posted the highest average of 1.3.

That was a cigarette-paper’s width more than Liverpool, whose followers taking part in the poll averaged 1.4.

More than 1500 fans took part from across the 20 Premier League clubs.

Chelsea’s supporters were third-most optimistic with 2.7, with Tottenham fans confident of a top-four repeat, and 81% even backing them to win their first trophy since 2008.

It shows just how things have turned around for Spurs under Antonio Conte who has brought his high-achieving mentality into a dressing room already boasting Harry Kane and Son Heung-Min.

Manchester United supporters picked an average place of fifth, suggesting their malaise will continue even with Erik ten Hag’s new philosophy.

Newcastle may be cash-rich but Geordies are not getting ahead of themselves, picking an average spot of 7.6, which was behind West Ham and Leicester but just ahead of Wolves.

The Toon army are also split completely down the middle over their chances of kicking off the new era with a trophy this term.

No team averaged a prediction lower than 13th, showing how naturally supporters are glass half full when it comes to their team’s chances.

Newly-promoted Nottingham Forest were most pessimistic with 12,7, narrowly ahead of Southampton (12.6) and Everton (12.5).

In the 11s, fellow newbies Fulham and Bournemouth sandwiched Leeds whose followers

appear realistic after the sale of Kalvin Phillips that the best Jesse Marsch can hope for is mediocrity.

While watchers of Aston Villa and Brighton both seem to think their teams can finish in the top half, narrowly ahead of Brentford.

When it comes to the Champions League, Chelsea supporters feel semi-final heartbreak is most likely, a round further than Spurs fans are tipping their team to reach.

Liverpool’s confidence seems to be at an all-time high with the majority of their voters expecting a repeat of 2019.

That was when they were crowned champions of Europe a season after losing the final to Real Madrid, just as they did in Paris in May.

Klopp responded at the start of that campaign four years ago with a quick, transformative signing in Fabinho. The hope is he can replicate the trick with Darwin Nunez.

City supporters though, well, their near misses under Guardiola appear to have got to them.

Most surveyed reckon they will end up as losing finalists again, just as they did against Chelsea in Porto two terms ago.
