HORNETS DESPERATE FOR SUMMER RECRUITS FOLLOWING EXODUS

Championship fans rate their transfer windows so far and pinpoint the key transfers their clubs’ need

WATFORD fans have sent their club a message over their lack of summer incomings, which loosely translates to: Get a move on.

Relegation from the Premier League is rough with players wanting to jump ship and all that top-flight TV cash no longer stuffing the coffers.

There is a reason parachute payments are there - even if not everyone agrees with them.

The Hornets are currently adapting to the new normal of being in the second tier, but not fast enough for some of their supporters’ liking.

Voting in Sky Bet’s Fan Hope Survey, those canvassed for whom Vicarage Road is their bimonthly pilgrimage said they were not satisfied with their club’s recruitment so far this close-season.

It is understandable given that only Vakoun Bayo and Scott Holding have been brought in, from Charleroi and Stockport respectively, by new boss Rob Edwards.

While the likes of Moussa Sissoko, Philip Zinckernagel, Cucho Hernandez, Andre Gray, Josh King and Ben Foster have all departed.

Supporters of West Brom, Wigan, Birmingham and Sunderland all generally felt the same way.

Yet followers of Bristol City, Luton, Preston and QPR have all been pleasantly surprised with their sides’ work in the transfer market.

The Robins have brought in seasoned defender Kal Naismith; Cauley Woodrow has gone back to Kenilworth Road; exciting goalkeeper Freddie Woodman has left Newcastle permanently for North End and QPR have snapped up Jake Clarke-Salter on a free.

Supporters from across the Championship were also asked which position they would most like filled this summer and unsurprisingly, striker was the standout choice.

In fact, only Rotherham, who are after a centre-back, and Wigan, needing a defensive midfielder, prioritised another position.

Middlesbrough want a centre-forward more than anyone else in the division, with 77 per cent of their fanbase desperate for a new goal-getter.

That is understandable given Aaron Connolly and Folarin Balogun have returned to their respective parents clubs Brighton and Arsenal after last season’s loans.

Attacking midfield was also a popular choice, with Swansea, Norwich, Hull and Blackburn among those supporters crying out for some more creativity in the middle of the park.

Reading’s faithful meanwhile are craving an anchor man to stem the tide.

Goals win games though and fans also cast their vote on how much they would splash out on a top Championship striker.

The result was split evenly between £5-10million and £10-15m.

Just two sides’ fans deviated from those figures: penny-pinching Rotherham, who went for £1-5m and big-spending Stoke, who could stretch to £20-25m.
