SPORTING LIFE-INFOGOL: TERRIERS TO TUMBLE

Huddersfield in for rude awakening according to xG experts

We’re happy to admit we got the Sky Bet Championship relegation market completely wrong last season when putting up Bristol City and Huddersfield. Derby being excluded from the prices made things difficult on that occasion, Barnsley’s collapse was unexpected and Peterborough were too short to back, which made it tricky.
Despite them reaching the play-off final last season HUDDERSFIELD are again backed for the drop.

There are plenty of reasons for this, starting with the reasons why we shouldn’t back the favourites.
At the head of the market, Reading - shrouded in doubt in terms of a possible points deduction - and Rotherham - to the Championship and League One what Norwich are to the Premier League and Championship - are too short-priced. Birmingham are another with major issues on and off the field, but again - too short.
There was the temptation to stick with Bristol City too, but it is the fact Huddersfield are priced as such an outsider that means they are the only selection that piques interest in this market.

Yes, the Terriers finished third last season and were beaten play-off finalists, but they overperformed massively based on underlying numbers, ranking only 12th on expected points (xP).
Granted, it’s a long way from an expected finish of 12th to relegation, but after the club parted company with head coach Carlos Corberan, who masterminded their surprising finish last term, concerns are rightly raised.
The Terriers appointed Danny Schofield as his successor, a man whose only previous experience managing has come as caretaker boss of Huddersfield for short stints.
A summer squad exodus, most notably star men Harry Toffolo and Lewis O’Brien are set to join Nottingham Forest, will make things a serious challenge for the inexperienced coach.
Taking a chance on Huddersfield is advised. It would be no shock to us at Sporting Life-Infogol should the intense, surprising highs of last season be followed by a crash.
From a data-perspective, Town display all the hallmarks of a team that could be dysfunctional in 22/23.
