Joe Lumley / Loan / Middlesbrough
The goalkeeper was in and out of the Middlesbrough side last season as he struggled to establish himself thanks to a string of errors. Questionable whether he'll improve Reading's leaky defence. 1/5
Dean Bouzanis / Free / Sutton
Much-travelled Australian goalie Dean Bouzanis performed well for Sutton last season but this is a big step up. 2/5
Tom Ince / Free / Stoke
The once highly sought-after forward received mixed reviews for his performances during a 15-game loan stint with the Royals in the second half of last season which yielded two goals and he’s unlikely to be the answer to their goalscoring problems. 2/5
Tyrese Fornah / Loan / Nottingham Forest
Midfielder Fornah went on loan to Shrewsbury last season and looks ready for the Championship. He has good energy and power. 3/5
Jeff Hendrick / Loan / Newcastle
Midfielder who is into the veteran stage of his career and didn't pull up many trees on loan at QPR last season. He will provide some experience to the side however. 2/5
Shane Long / Free / Southampton
Homecoming for another experienced signing, this veteran striker has not netted double figures since 2016 however and is likely to play no more than a bit part role. 2/5
Sam Hutchinson / Free / Sheffield Wednesday
Wednesday fans were disappointed to see the all-action defensive midfielder leave and Reading have picked up a decent player for a song. However, he's not without his flaws with his injury and disciplinary records particularly concerning. 2/5
Nesta Guinness-Walker / Free / AFC Wimbledon
Reading are taking a gamble on being able to unlock the potential of the former Chelsea and Tottenham youngster, with the left-back hardly pulling up trees at old side AFC Wimbledon. 2/5
Mamadou Loum / Loan / Porto
The 25-year-old midfielder was part of the Senegal squad who won this year's Africa Cup of Nations. He made 32 appearances for Alaves in La Liga last season so should be a classy operator in the Championship. 4/5

No team kept fewer clean sheets than Reading last season with the Royals proving vulnerable from set pieces as they conceded a league-high 21 goals from dead ball situations. Key defender Liam Moore will miss the first few months because of injury too.
Reading conceded an average of 14.5 shots per game last season. Only Peterborough's average (14.7) was higher.
Reading have lost a key creative influence in John Swift, who contributed 13 assists last season and created more chances (89) than any other Championship player.
Reading are heavily reliant on Lucas Joao, who hit double figures for league goals for the third time in the last four Championship seasons and was one of only two players to have 20 or more shots on target.
Reading overcame a six-point deduction to secure safety last season but their troubles have not gone away and there is every chance that the drop to League One has merely been delayed. The Royals squad looks heavily youth dependent, leaving them more susceptible than most when injuries and suspensions arise. Star player John Swift has moved on and his goals and assists will be sorely missed.
