PREMIER LEAGUE FANS REVEAL WHICH GROUNDS HAVE THE BEST AND WORST ATMOSPHERES
St James’ Park was pipped to the top spot by a ground steeped in tradition
THE waving red flags, the deafening noise, You’ll Never Walk Alone… just the thought of a packed-out Anfield ahead of a big game is enough to give you goosebumps.
And now Liverpool’s world-famous stadium has been voted as the best atmosphere in the Premier League.
More than 1500 top-flight supporters were asked about which grounds produced the best and worst ambience as part of Sky Bet’s Fan Hope Survey.
When the results of both questions were put together, Anfield was head and shoulders above any other Premier League venue.
Nearest to the home of the six-time European champions was Newcastle’s St James’ Park.
The Geordie cathedral has been back in full voice since last season’s takeover and is certain to stage some electric matchdays this term.
Selhurst Park, Elland Road and the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium came in third, fourth and fifth, which is testament to the decibel level those sets of supporters regularly produce.
At the other end of the scale, West Ham’s much-maligned London Stadium came in last - even with the improved atmosphere witnessed at last term’s Europa League run.
Bournemouth’s Vitality Stadium was a somewhat harsh close second-last, given the noise they can generate down on the South Coast, followed by Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium and Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium.
Fans were also quizzed on which in-game infringement annoys them most and the response came over loud and clear.
Diving - or simulation, if you want to be diplomatic about it - is what grinds the gears of most fans more than anything, with time-wasting a distant second.
Every club had players taking a tumble as their standout choice, apart from, curiously, Brentford, who found teams trying to run the clock down equally infuriating.
To complete the fan experience questionnaire, supporters settled the age-old debate of what matters more: being entertained or winning matches?
It turns out that most supporters just want the three points, with 58 per cent prioritising victories. If they come in exhilarating circumstances, that is a bonus.
Crystal Palace followers are the keenest on being entertained, possibly as a result of watching Roy Hodgson’s pragmatic style for four years.
Whereas Everton, having come perilously close to losing their status as a Premier League ever-present, favoured winning more than anyone, just ahead of Chelsea.
The Toffees were also second to only Manchester United in feeling the most short-changed for entertainment by their club last season.
Supporters of Southampton, Leeds, Wolves, Newcastle, Leicester and Aston Villa were hardly bowled over either.
At the other end of the scale, City and Liverpool felt most thrilled - quelle surprise - with West Ham, Palace plus promoted pair Bournemouth and Nottingham Forest not far behind.
