Key Transfers

IN

Raheem Sterling / £47.5m / Manchester City

The England international becomes the first signing of the new era at Chelsea. The pacy forward scored 131 times in 339 appearances for Manchester City in all competitions and brings proven Premier League pedigree. 4/5

IN

Kalidou Koulibaly / £33m / Napoli

The Blues may not be getting the Senegalese centre-back at his peak but he's still a good replacement for Antonio Rudiger and his aggressive style should marry well with Premier League football. 4/5

IN

Gabriel Slolina / £12m / Chicago Fire

The 18--year-old has been quick to establish himself as MLS's most exciting young goalkeeper, keeping 11 clean sheets in 30 appearances for a bad Fire team, and he'll remain on loan at Chicago for the remainder of the MLS season before continuing his development at Chelsea. 3/5

IN

Carney Chukwuemeka / £20m / Aston Villa

One of the most promising youngsters in the country who it was thought may depart abroad after a contract impasse with Aston Villa but has been snagged by Chelsea. Could look like a very good deal in a few years if he continues on his upward trajectory. 4/5

IN

Marc Cucurella / £60m / Brighton

Talented and versatile Spaniard who can operate at both left wing-back and centre-half. Improves the squad but the fee does look on the steep side. 3/5

Insights

1

Chelsea were 'invincible' in the first-half of games last season, becoming the first team in Premier League history not to be losing a match at the interval.

2

Mason Mount was Chelsea's main creative force last season, finishing as their top Premier League scorer with 11 goals and recording a team-best ten assists.

3

Chelsea have finished no higher than third and no lower than fourth in each of the last four seasons.

4

Chelsea spread the goals around more than any other team with a Premier League high of 18 different players getting their names on the scoresheet and have added another strong attacking asset to their squad in Raheem Sterling.

Season Verdict

Our prediction for League finish: 4th

Chelsea suffered an understandably choppy finish to last season with takeover talk dominating the headlines but they were still able to claim third and will be looking to maintain their status as regular Champions League qualifiers. Losing defensive rock Antonio Rudiger is a major blow but Thomas Tuchel has a strong, deep squad and can steer the Blues to another top-four finish.
